How can I Stop Grinding Teeth

If you’ve been to your Eagle Rock dentist for a sore jaw when you wake up in the morning, there is a chance that you might suffer from bruxism. This is a condition where people tend to grind and clench their teeth together a lot. This can actually damage your teeth quite badly, but there are a few things that you can do. If you have noticeable tooth damage, then it is best to go in immediately.

Now, you might wonder why it’s so bad to grind your teeth. Some of us might not even realize that we do it. Well, let’s start with the muscles in the mouth. They help you chew and speak, so they’re some of the strongest in the body. Stress, anxiety, and even anger actually causes your jaw to clench a lot, which means that these muscles are actually putting a lot of force on your teeth. Sometimes, this doesn’t cause serious damage, but think about it, you’re putting a ton of force onto there, and for those with bruxism, doing that all the time can actually not only change your dental health, but other health issues as well. It can lead to cracking and chips, losing teeth, various head and ear aches, but also inflammation of the jaw and lockjaw, so it’s something that you should consider if you’re doing it a whole lot

Now, what can you do about this? First, get a mouth guard. This is pretty common at night for most people, but you can’t control the movements of your mouth when you’re sleeping, so this mouth guard can protect your teeth at night. This might not prevent grinding, but it can actually reduce the force so that it’s not directly impacting the teeth. You can get an over-the-counter one from a drugstore, but you can also get a custom mouth guard if you need it.

Now, you should also think about the stress and anxiety that you have. If you’re someone that is often stressed, you might be clenching your teeth because of that. You should look for ways to reduce the stress in your life so that the muscles don’t take it out on your teeth. There are many stress relief activities that you can do, for example meditation, yoga, or even just taking a bath or a walk at night can make you feel relaxed. Do consider these, for they can help you have a much better time, and you’ll reduce the impact that this has on your jaw.

Now, you should also keep in mind what you are eating as well, for this can be a huge part of it. If you’re using your jaw a lot, don’t try to overwork it. The overworking of the jaw actually causes a lot of tension, which in turn will lead to grinding your teeth. You should keep this in mind if you suffer from it, but, if you do notice this, you should try to avoid some of the tough meats and the chewy candy. This will help you with making sure that you’re not getting affected by this, and it’ll make your life a whole lot easier.

Finally, avoid alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol actually increases the urge to clench your teeth, and caffeine will increase the jittery motions and tension that are there, which then will lead to tooth grinding. These can actually both increase the symptoms of bruxism. You should strive to avoid these during the evening hours, and you should make sure that you keep this in mind, and make sure that you do what is best for your own personal health and wellness as well.

Bruxism isn’t a fun thing to have, and for many people, it can be quite rough on the body. However, by ensuring that you take the time to counteract these feelings, by making sure that you control bruxism, you’ll be able to keep your teeth around for a lot longer and not only that, you’ll be able to reduce stress that might be present on your mouth as well. Do talk to your Eagle Rock dentist for further information and help as well if you desire.
